Graduate: Matthew Baker

Ensign Matthew Bradley Baker has earned a master of science degree in applied physics and materials science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Baker successfully defended his thesis “Optical Properties of Nanostructured Tungsten Trioxide” April 9.
The 2002 valedictorian of A.L. Brown High School is a 2006 meritorious graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
He will now be stationed at Naval Station Goose Creek in Charleston, S.C., where he will continue submarine officer training by completing a year of academic and professional training at Naval Nuclear Power School.
He is also slated for promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (0-2) in May.
His parents are Benny and Cathy Baker of Kannapolis.
