WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Researchers at Wake Forest University have been given a $42 million grant to study new ways to treat soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The grant announced Thursday goes to a group of academic and private groups lead by Wake Forest’s Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Wake also has $150 million to compliment the federal grant.
Researchers will work in five areas: burn repair, reducing scarring, head and face reconstruction, limb reconstruction, regeneration and transplantation and improving blood flow after injuries.
More than 30,000 service members have been wounded since 2002.
Dr. Mark Van Dyke says researchers will focus on the body’s capacity to regenerate tissue.
Rutgers University is getting a similar grant.
