A Salisbury man racked up numerous charges, including assault, after authorities said he had a dispute with his ex-girlfriend’s new beau at a local bar.Salisbury Police charged Edward Lee Coughenour, 40, of 418 W. Bank St., Salisbury, with resist, delay and obstructing a public officer; assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury; assault by pointing a gun; communicating threats; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; driving after having consumed alcohol; open container; driving while impaired and driving while license revoked.
Coughenour went to the Rock Bottom Saloon on Klumac Road, where he apparently exchanged words with the new boyfriend outside the bar.
When police arrived, Coughenour, who had been earlier seen with a handgun, was attempting to leave in his 2002 Dodge Ram pickup.
According to Salisbury Chief Deputy Steve Whitley, Coughenour dismissed officers’ commands to get out of the truck. He tried to drive off, Whitley said.
Officers surrounded the vehicle, but Coughenour was still trying to leave. In an effort to stop the suspect, officers shot out a front tire. The flattened tire didn’t stop the man, who still tried to leave the scene. Another officer shot out two more tires.
When Coughenour stopped the truck, officers opened the door and pulled him out.
“He had a pistol in his lap. He also had a lock-blade knife,” he said.
Coughenour had a silver semi-automatic handgun.
A struggle ensued, Whitley said, but the suspect was finally arrested.
Whitley noted the bar is usually quiet.
No one was injured during the incident.
