A Rowan County Grand Jury has indicted three men, one a former Rowan County Detention Center officer, on charges they assaulted a prisoner at the Rowan County Detention Center.
Robert Paul Rainey, 33, Demetrius Dion Nunn, 34, and Michael Alan Shue were indicted March 31 for felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
Shue was a Rowan Detention Center officer at the time of the alleged assault.
According to a statement from the Rowan County District Attorney’s Office, Shue is no longer employed by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
The release says that on Feb. 12, Sheriff George Wilhelm informed District Attorney Bill Kenerly that an inmate may have been assaulted in the Detention Center, and he requested the assistance of the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation. Upon the completion of that investigation, bills of indictment were submitted to the Rowan County Grand Jury, the statement said.
The victim, Eric Burton, was assaulted Feb. 11.
Wilhelm referred questions to the District Attorney’s Office.
Kenerly said he could not talk about the case, but did say Burton’s injuries required him to be hospitalized.
“He was treated at Central Prison,” Kenerly said.
No further information detailing the nature of the assault was available Wednesday.
Shue has no listed telephone number.
Rainey has been convicted in Rowan, Yancey, Davie and Iredell counties for breaking and entering, larceny and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Nunn was convicted of felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, felony common law robbery and second-degree kidnapping in Rowan County. He has also been convicted of driving while license revoked, driving while impaired, resisting arrest, assault by pointing a gun, communicating threats and assault on a female in Cabarrus, Davidson, Iredell and Stanly counties.
