Gray Stone Day School and Mu Alpha Theta math club hosted a Math 24 Tournament recently at Pfeiffer University for students from Stanfield Elementary School, Albemarle, Mount Pleasant, C.C. Griffin and Kannapolis middle schools.
Math 24 is a mental math competition that requires students to use problem solving skills, pattern sensing and concentration. They may not use calculators.
Hannah Love, an eighth grader from Kannapolis Middle School was a finalist.
Mock Trial winner
Gray Stone Day School’s mock trial team has won on the state level and will now compete in national competition May 18-20 in Charlotte.
Sam Hurley, Raegan Perry and Kaitlen Price were the attorneys. Eldon Zacek III, Danny Horner, Katie Hopkins and Caitlin Corbett were the witnesses.
Perry received a Best Attorney Award, and Eldon Zaceck received three Best Witness Awards, including Best Witness in the final round.
Anna Morrison, an assistant district attorney from Union County, is the team’s attorney advisor. Scott Wilson is the coach.
Gray Stone’s Mock Trial team will compete in the national competition that is to be held in the new Charlotte courthouse on May 18-20.
N.C. A&T dean’s list
Eleven Rowan County students have been named to the fall semester dean’s list at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro.
They are Maurice Adkins, Jacqueline Barber, Alyssia Cunningham, Alyssa Gilmore, Brittney Lowery, Kendra McCain, Maria Moore, Evan Myers, Shawane Saulters, Conchetta Sharpe and Shirelle Wright.
Adventist honor roll
Five students have been named to the all-A honor roll for the second quarter at Salisbury Seventh-day Adventist School.
They are Diane Rose, William Scott, Josh McCarthy, Noe Flo and Mars Minter.
Relay For Life award
The American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event, Relay For Life, has designated South Elementary School in Mooresville as a “Relay For Life School.”
The school’s faculty and students held a “Mini Relay for Life” recently that raised more than $3,000 for the American Cancer Society.
South Elementary is the first school in Iredell County to receive this recognition.
Liberty dean’s list
Two local students have been named to the fall semester dean’s list at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., for earning a 3.5 or above grade-point average.
They are Lindsey Isley of Cleveland and Karis Myers of Salisbury.
Band boosters gift
The Erwin/East Rowan Band Boosters Association has received $5,000 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation.
The gift will be used to buy new marching band uniforms.
Food Lion is also a supporter of the Food Lion Classic Marching Band Contest held at East Rowan High School.
Davie expansion
MOCKSVILLE ó The Community Building on the Davie Campus of Davidson County Community College is being renovated as a modern library with computers and wireless Internet connections.
Also, a new Lab Building addition contains 8,500 square feet of new construction housing a large, multiple-use classroom with a flexible room divider that can accommodate up to 104 people. The classroom will open onto an outside patio for meals or breaks.
Other features of the $2 million construction project include a new conference room furnished with wood flooring donated by Unilin Flooring of Thomasville, a bookstore, one-stop student services area, a kitchen and administrative offices.
