A Salisbury woman died Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle in front of Christo’s Family Restaurant on East Innes Street.
Shirley Ann Barnes, 41, of 117 S. Shaver St. was transported to Rowan Regional Medical Center by ambulance, where she was pronounced dead, according to Sgt. K.C. Wilborn of the Salisbury Police Department.
Wilborn said Barnes was breathing and had a faint pulse when Emergency Medical Service personnel first arrived on the scene.
When she stopped breathing, he said they began administering CPR, continuing en route to the medical center, where other resuscitation efforts failed to revive her.
Barnes, who lived less than a block from the restaurant, was walking with a friend to an unknown destination when the accident occurred at 9:58 p.m. “It appears that she may have stepped into the lane of travel,” Wilborn said.
Barnes was struck in the outside lane at 431 E. Innes by a 1995 Ford Explorer being driven east by Jonathon Heredia of 1120 Tall Oak Circle. Heredia was charged with driving with no operator’s license, Wilborn said, adding that other charges are pending completion of the investigation.
Salisbury police were still on the accident scene at midnight.
Wilborn said this was the first pedestrian fatality in the city this year.
