Civitan scholarships
The Salisbury Civitan Club awarded a record $12,000 in scholarships at its annual Scholarship Day luncheon.
Eight local college and high school students received the 2008 awards of $1,500. The awards increased $500 this year thanks to growth in the club’s Charitable Foundation and a generous anonymous donation.
College recipients are selected by faculty and department members at Catawba, Livingstone and Rowan-Cabarrus Community colleges. High school applicants compete in an application process, which includes an essay and a demonstration of service to the community. The Club Scholarship Committee selects winners with assistance from high school guidance departments.
The 2008 scholarship awards include:
– Dr. Walter Low: Tatum Scholarships in Nursing, RCCC students Nikki Deese of Charlotte, associate degree nursing student, and Cassie Hopkins of Concord, practical nursing degree program student.
– John Nelson Haden Scholarship in Music: April Hafner of Wausau, Wis., senior music and music business major at Catawba.
