A Salisbury Police officer was in the right place at the right time Thursday to catch a man accused of breaking into a motor vehicle.
According to law enforcement officials, a man pounded on the door of the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office Thursday afternoon saying he’d just seen someone break into his car.
The man asked the magistrate to call police.
Officer T.J. Crews was in the magistrate’s office and immediately pursued the suspect on foot.
Following a chase, Charles Reginald Springs, 51, of the streets of Salisbury, was apprehended and charged with a variety of offenses.
According to arrest warrants filed at the magistrate’s office, Springs was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle, larceny after breaking and entering, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of stolen goods/property.
He’s being held under a $100,000 bond in the Rowan County Detention Center.
According to law enforcement officials, Jason Shane Holliday was returning to the car he was driving, a 1985 Toyota, when he spied Springs breaking into the vehicle.
Holliday grabbed Springs in a headlock, but Springs put a razor utility knife against his back and told him he’d cut him if he didn’t let him go. Holliday complied, then ran to the magistrate’s office for help.
The chase took place along Church Street, not far from the magistrate’s office.
According to warrants, Springs had stolen a cell phone, speakers and a DVD radio player all valued at more than $500 from the Toyota.
