LEXINGTON—Davie County pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 37-19 nonconference win Friday over winless Lexington.
One big reason it was closer than expected was Davie running back Cade Carney did not play.
The other reason: The War Eagles (2-1) committed three turnovers in the first half, and they finished the night with four bad snaps that resulted in minus-49 yards.
“When you turn the ball over as many times as we did, that let them know they could have some success,” Davie County coach Devore Holman said.
Davie fumbled on the game’s fifth play, and Lexington quarterback Nick Shuping broke a 30-yard run for the Yellow Jackets’ first offensive touchdown of the season. It was 6-0 after the missed PAT.
Davie took the lead for good later in the first as it marched 70 yards. Parker Correll accounted for 66 of the yards on passes and runs.
Cameron Coleman’s 31-yard run to the Lexington 2 led to a score that gave Davie a 13-6 lead at the break.
Correll threw two interceptions in the first half, but he more than made up for them. He completed 15 of 24 passes for 201 yards and two scores, he rushed for a career-high 118 yards and scored three times on the ground.
Lexington (0-3) fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half, and Ben Ellis’ 10-yard reception pushed the margin to 19-6.
A bad snap led to a turnover, and the Yellow Jackets took possession at the Davie 1. They capitalized, cutting the margin to 19-12 with 4:49 left in the third.
Davie could breathe easier when Jonn Young’s 25-yard field goal provided a 22-12 lead.
Davie closed well. Ellis’ 55-yard catch-and-run led to a touchdown with 7:21 remaining, and Chris Reynolds’ 14-yard catch extended the lead to 37-12.
Lexington’s Daniel Reid-Bennett, who had 175 rushing yards, ran 83 yards for a touchdown with 3:19 to go.
Shuping was effective completing passes underneath, going 19 of 27 for 122 yards.
Davie takes on North Rowan next week.
