KANNAPOLIS ó The family of a 2-year-old boy who nearly drowned in a pond this weekend during a family outing, are asking for prayers.
Aidan Wright was at a family friend’s home at 4579 Hilton Lake Road when he wandered from the group, which was gathered to celebrate his birthday.
The incident occurred Saturday around 4 p.m. The child was found floating in a pond near the house. His family worked to revive him, as did emergency medical personnel.
The family issued a statement Thursday, saying:
“The efforts and quick actions by immediate family members (father Russell Wright and grandmother Sonia Sinclair) as well as additional rescue personnel who later arrived at the scene have been, and continue to be, greatly appreciated.”
Aidan turned 2 on Thursday, contrary to previous reports.
According to the statement, Aidan has been stabilized, but his condition remains listed as critical.
Family friend Danny Lewis said Wednesday that doctors had placed the child in a medically induced coma, and he is battling pneumonia.
The statement goes on to say:
“He is receiving round-the-clock care by the dedicated staff at the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital and we, as a family, remain at his bedside.”
The hospital is part of Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.
The family asked that the public and the media respect their privacy.
“Prayers and best wishes on behalf of Aidan are most welcome and we greatly appreciate the numerous offers of support from so many people throughout the region,” the statement said.
An account has been established at Wachovia Bank to assist the family financially. The account, in Aidan Wright’s name, can receive donations at any branch.
