KANNAPOLIS ó A 23-month-old child pulled from a pond unconscious was in critical condition late Saturday night.
A Cabarrus EMS unit responded to a 911 call at 4579 Hilton Lake Road around 3:37 p.m. Saturday. The caller reported that a child had been found unresponsive in a pond on the property.
Hilton Lake Road runs off Centergrove Road on the east side of Kannapolis between Interstate 85 and Old Concord Road.
According to a press release from the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office, paramedics arrived and attempted to revive the child.
The statement noted the child was alive but in critical condition when taken to the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.
Sheriff’s deputies also responded to the scene. The criminal investigations division is investigating the case, though there is no indication of any criminal action, according to the statement from the Sheriff’s Office.
Carl Robert Sinclair of Norwood told deputies that he and Danny Eugene Lewis were watching the child by a carport.
Sinclair told Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Deputy N.P. Gue that at some point he couldn’t find the child and started looking for him.
In addition to calling 911, Sinclair or another person at the house called a friend, Adam Keller, who works for Cabarrus EMS and lives nearby on Camp Julia Road.
Keller told the deputy that he started CPR on the child.
The Sheriff’s Office did not immediately release the name or additional information about the child.
