Tyler Schenk, 14, got his first buck while hunting in Macon, Miss., during a visit with family friends last month.
He is the son of Janet and Barry Schenk.
The seven-pointer was his third deer of the season. He got one doe and one buttonhead that he killed with a 20-gauge shotgun using double-ought buckshot near his home here in Salisbury.
“Tyler and his Dad enjoy making and eating deer jerky. Even though his Dad is proud of his hunting skills, he is ready to clean something little smaller for awhile,” his mother said in an e-mail.
“We have plenty of deer meat now in the freezer to eat. I have already made a meatloaf and it was wonderful.”

The Piedmont North Carolina Division Of the National Fishers Of Men Trail is offering a fishing essay competition to anglers from 8 to 19 1/2.

Every entrant will receive a prize. The winner gets an all-expense paid entry to fish two tournaments in The Legacy Series, which is a new Child Adult Competition.

Evin Stanford, a surveys and research biologist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, has been chosen as the N.C. Bowhunters Association’s wildlife biologist of the year.
“He was instrumental with the introduction of an urban archery deer season in North Carolina.” said Ramon Bell, president of N.C. Bowhunters Association. “He monitors the deer population throughout the state and makes recommendations beneficial to the health of the herd. He’s a true sportsman himself, going bow and gun hunting.”
Stanford has been with the Commission since 1998, when he began as assistant small game project leader. He became the Commission’s deer biologist in 2001 and now serves as a surveys and research biologist, primarily focusing on deer and wild turkey.
Stanford will receive the award at the March 29 banquet, part of the activities of the 22nd annual N.C.
