After a month, N.C. Highway Patrol officials are still awaiting the cause of a wreck involving one of their own.
Sgt. Mark Gravitte was injured in a single-vehicle accident in early January. He was traveling on St. Paul’s Church Road when he ran off the road. It was unclear if the trooper was chasing someone.
Investigators believed Gravitte, of Salisbury, was trying to catch a speeder when he lost control of his car.
His cruiser went through a field, struck a ditch, went airborne and slammed into a tree. Gravitte was airlifted from the scene and taken to Carolinas Medical Center.
“He was released three days later,” Sgt. J.M. Ward said.
Ward said the case is still being investigated by wreck reconstructionists.
“The reconstructionists haven’t come back with their findings,” he said.
When asked how long it could possibly take, Ward said it depends on the caseload.
Gravitte has not returned to work as of yet. He is part of the Highway Patrol’s Motor Carrier Enforcement division.
