Whitehead grants
Catawba College and Pfeiffer University are among the 35 colleges and universities in North Carolina to receive annual grants from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation.
The primary purpose of the foundation, which recently received the Council of Independent Colleges 2008 Award for Philanthropy, is to provide educational opportunities to needy women in nine Southeastern states.
Based in Atlanta, the foundation annually funds scholarships for over 8,000 female students at 201 schools in the southeast.
Catawba dean’s list
The following area students have been named to the fall semester dean’s list at Catawba College. They achieved a 3.5 or higher grade-point average in 15 or more semester hours.

Conference presenter
Pamela Konwinski, an exceptional children’s teacher at North Rowan Middle School, made a presentation at the November biennual convocation of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education in Louisville, Ky.
Her presentation, “Special Education Basics: What Every Educator Should Know,” includes information on understanding special education acronyms, Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), modifications, accommodations and resources available for students with disabilities.
Konwinski, a member of the honor society, also equips her colleagues with practical strategies and resources to be used in any classroom.
She is scheduled to present at this year’s Raising Achievement and Closing the Gap Conference XII in Greensboro.
A Michigan native, she has a bachelor of science degree in special education, mental impairment, from Eastern Michigan University.
