KANNAPOLIS ó Police are continuing efforts to notify next of kin of a 29-year-old Kannapolis woman killed in a Thursday evening accident.
And police have determined that a Kannapolis man known for his avid support of the A.L. Brown football program died of medical distress, not from injuries in a Wednesday accident.
Jimmy Lee Smith, 69 of 512 Eastway Ave., was driving a 2008 Chevrolet car south on Little Texas Road toward his home around 5:08 p.m. Wednesday when the vehicle crossed the center line.
Smith’s vehicle struck a 2003 Mazda driven by Jose Martins of Villas, N.J., spinning the vehicle in the path of a third vehicle, a 1993 Lincoln Continental taxi owned by TJ’s Taxi and driven by Connnie Jean Goodman Treece.
The Cabarrus EMS transported Smith to CMC-NorthEast where he died.
Smith’s son, Scott Smith, is an officer with the Kannapolis Police.
In the Thursday accident, the 29-year-old woman was driving a 1998 Pontiac on Shady Lane Extension around 8:19 p.m. when she failed to reduce speed at the intersection with Flicker Street.
The car went straight ahead and struck a tree.
The area of the accident is off South Main Street near Cooks Crossing.
The woman was transported to CMC-NorthEast where she died, according to the report filed by Officer J.L. Royce.
