The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education is scheduled to hear an update about new high school classes and graduation requirements at its meeting this evening.
The state’s new Future-Ready Core Course of Study will affect students who will enter high school next year.
Kathy McDuffie, the director of secondary education for the Rowan-Salisbury School System, is scheduled to brief board members tonight.
She is also scheduled to talk about proposed changes to the school system’s differentiated diploma program. Earlier this year, the school board voted to allow students at Henderson Independent School to graduate with fewer credits than typically required.
The board will meet in closed session at 5 p.m. at 110 S. Long St. in East Spencer. The public meeting begins at 6 p.m.
The board also is scheduled to:
– Consider several athletic improvement projects at West Rowan High School. Some bleachers in the football stadium need replacing, officials say.
The school system is replacing three old tennis courts at West with six new courts. In the future, the school wants to replace more bleachers at the football stadium and get a new running track.
-? Consider the proposal to install security cameras at Salisbury High School and Knox Middle School.
– Receive a report of schools’ testing performances based on state and federal standards.
– Hear a report from Dixon-Hughes, which conducted a financial audit for the school system.
– Hear about the Cotton Mill project, a collaboration between Salisbury and the school system’s elementary schools.
– Likely talk about the school system’s budget and where cuts can be made. Recently, state leaders announced school systems must slash their budgets because of money problems statewide. Rowan-Salisbury schools must cut more than $800,0000.
