Staff report
An 81-year-old man charged with indecent liberties with a child requested a court-appointed attorney during his first court appearance Monday morning.
Aubrey Neal Grimes, of Salisbury, was charged late last week with two counts of first-degree sex offense with a child and one count of taking indecent liberties with a child.
Grimes, who many know as “Pops,” has been volunteered for years with Little League baseball in eastern Rowan County.
Rowan County Sheriff’s Office officials said the victim is an 8-year-old boy who was not associated with Little League.
Grimes has admitted to other victims in incidents spanning a decade, authorities said.
Most of the incidents occurred in 2007 at Grimes’ Ashford Circle home. The investigation was initiated by a parent who filed a report.
Officials are still asking other victims or anyone with information about the case to contact Sgt. Chad Moose at 704-216-8687 or Det. Jason Whitley at 704-216-8712.
Grimes was convicted in 1987 of taking indecent liberties with a child in Guilford County.
Grimes’ next court date is slated for Nov. 26. He remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.
