Staff report
CHINA GROVE ó Three former aldermen have been elected to leadership posts on the town’s Zoning Board of Adjustments.
Rodney Phillips is the new chairman. He replaces Lois Elliott, who held the post for 20 years.
The board elected Barbara Doby as vice-chairwoman, replacing Harry Mills.
Don Webb is the new secretary. He replaces Martha Corriher, who resigned as secretary but remains on the board.
The reorganization session came after the Board of Aldermen opted to appoint new members to the Zoning Board of Adjustments.
The board and the town are currently targets of a legal action by Steve Stroud, a former alderman. The Zoning Board ruled in favor of a complaint by Elliott that the town improperly permitted Stroud’s home-based business, Tar Heel Safe and Lock.
Elliott said noise from the business bothered her, while several other neighbors testified they did not hear excessive noise.
The Stroud complaint is scheduled to be heard in Rowan County Superior Court in January.
Other Zoning Board members include Harry Rogers, Boyd Biles, Arthur Higgins, Charles Collins, Barbara Welter and Miranda Scott.
The terms of Biles, Higgins and Collins expire Dec. 31.
The Board of Aldermen has asked for applications to fill the three seats. To apply, contact Town Manager Bill Pless at 704-857-2466.
