KANNAPOLIS ó Rowan County Animal Control has confirmed its 13th rabies case so far this year.
Amy Voyles, of 149 Misty Lane, said she found a dead raccoon in her yard around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Voyles said she went outside to feed her dog, Anton, after she got home from work.
“It was back there where my dog was, just laying there dead,” Voyles, 29, said.
Voyles called the Animal Control office Monday, and she said her uncle moved the raccoon off to the side.
Animal Control officers removed the racoon and Voyles’ dog.
She said her 5-year-old daughter’s father bought the Chihuahua mix for their daughter. The dog had been at Voyles’ home about two months, she said.
Voyles said she was not sure if the dog was current on its rabies vaccination.
“I’m thinking it wasn’t,” she said.
When she found out Tuesday the raccoon had tested positive for rabies, Voyles agreed to have the dog euthanized.
