South Rowan’s boys basketball team lost 77-74 at Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.
John Davis made a layup with 10 seconds left to tie the game, but Northwest’s Tyler Honeycutt made a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining. The Raiders’ desperation 3-pointer at the horn was blocked.
Davis led the Raiders with 21 points, including 9-for-9 from the foul line. Mark McDaniel scored a career-best 19 points with aggressive drives, Brad Akers contributed 13 points, and Blake Houston hit three 3s.
South (2-4) was 22-for-22 from the foul line for the game and almost erased a 12-point, second-half deficit.
Senior guard Jordan Brand hit six of Northwest’s nine 3-pointers and scored 27 points for the Trojans. Codi Miller-McIntyre had 12 points, while Honeycutt scored 11.
“We saw what Northwest did to Mooresville at home (84-45) so we were concerned about this one, but we played our tails off,” South coach John Davis said. “I saw a lot of good things out there.”
South plays at Cox Mill for the first time tonight.

– South girls
South Rowan’s girls rallied in the second half but settled for a 49-47 loss at Northwest Cabarrus.
South (2-4) trailed 14-7 after one quarter and 26-14 at halftime. It pulled within 35-28 by the end of the third, and the Raiders cut Northwest’s lead to one point in the fourth.
Sam Goins attempted a runner in the closing seconds, and the buzzer sounded as South corralled the offensive rebound.
“Story of our season,” South coach Jarrod Smith said. “We come out slow, get in at halftime, make adjustments, come out in the third and fourth quarters and play better. If we don’t learn to start faster, we don’t have enough offensive firepower to come back on everybody.”
South’s press was more effective at creating steals in the second half. Nicole Barringer had 11 points for the Raiders. Kayla Morrow, who was dealing with a back injury, also scored 11 points.
“That’s the best game she’s played the whole season, and she was playing injured,” Smith said. “She played tough.”
South didn’t box out well when Northwest Cabarrus was at the line in the closing minutes, and the Raiders finished 8-for-19 on free throws.
“If you can’t hit free throws better than that, you can’t win close games,” Smith said.

– Carson girls
Carson’s girls basketball team lost at Concord Jay M. Robinson 53-36 on Monday. Carson (2-4) had the first two-game winning streak in program history snapped.
Breckin Settlemyer, a senior post player, led the Cougars with eight points.
Senior Tabby Koerner scored 12 points for Robinson. Junior Kelsee Cheek had 11.
It was 7-7 early, but Robinson scored the last 11 points of the first quarter to take control. Carson trailed 35-19 at halftime and played on even terms in the second half.
“It was a loss, but it was another step forward because we didn’t roll over at halftime,” Carson coach Brooke Misenheimer said. “We didn’t shoot well and we didn’t get to the foul line enough, but we did compete.”

West Rowan is home against Northwest Cabarrus on Wednesday for a girls JV-varsity doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
– Stallion split four games
The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions basketball teams split with Forsyth Home Education on Monday.
Daniel Lawson scored 12 points and Corbin Riley seven as the Stallion middle school boys won 44-19.
* The Stallion jayvee boys lost 67-42. Grant Stoller scored 21 points for the Stallions. Rockford Stoller had 10 and Spencer Bare six.
* The Stallion varsity boys lost 80-70. Michael Phillips scored 25 points. Matt Godley had 15 and James Dare 14.The Stallion varsity girls won 50-31. Hannah Holm scored 20 points. Ruthann Thomas had 10 and Helen Darden seven.
