Crown in Glory Lutheran Church will hold its annual African-American History Month program this Sunday at 4 p.m.
This year’s program is entitled “From King to Obama.” The program looks at accomplishments by African-Americans from 1969 to the present.
The emphasis will be on persons not in the spotlight who have made contributions that carry out King’s “Dream.” During each Sunday morning worship service, the church has been honoring the 12 NAACP pioneers who are being honored on commemorative stamps by the United States Post Office.
Crown In Glory’s choir, directed by Phyllis Partee, will provide music. Light refreshments will be served after the program.
The church is located at 517 E. Bank St. The Rev. Donald Anthony serves as vacancy pastor.
St. John’s Lutheran
St. John’s Lutheran Church invites the public to join their worship community for a Taize Service of Prayer for Epiphany this Sunday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
The Taize service is an intimate and quiet service of prayer, meditation and responsive singing led by the Taize musicians.
St. John’s will host their annual Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 2:30 to 7 p.m. The church goal is 60 pints or more.
The Red Cross will set up operation in the rooms in the education building. Parking will be on the lower level, behind the church on Jackson Street, near the kindergarten, and entrance will be from the courtyard. Sign up sheets will be available for members and visitors at all services and at the Wednesday meals in February. Wednesday meals are $3 and open to the public.

Antioch Missionary
On Feb. 15 at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, members and friends of the church will honor Pastor Rickey Johnson and First Lady Peggy Johnson’s fifth church anniversary.
Minister Ruby Steel, associate of Gethsemane Baptist Church, will speak at the 11 a.m. service.
The Rev. Dr. Clary Phelps, pastor of Gethsemane Baptist Church, along with his choir and congregation will deliver the 3 p.m. message.

Soldiers Memorial
Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church will have an evening of dining and music on Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. Admission is by donation of $25 for a couple and $15 single. Door prizes will be available.

Ministerial Alliance
The United Ministerial Alliance will hold its third Sunday Evening Fellowship service Sunday at 6 p.m. It will be held at Hall’s Temple Church on North Long Street in East Spencer.
The speaker will be the Elder Thomas Clawson, pastor of Lily Chapel Church of God, Salisbury.
The Rev. Elder Bruce is the pastor of Hall’s Temple.
Erwin Temple CME
COOLEEMEE ó The Erwin Temple Mass Choir will have its 13th anniversary celebration Sunday with a special musical ministry.
Morning worship will begin with devotions and praise led by the Christian Youth fellowship group.
The 11 a.m. message will be given by the pastor, the Rev. Ervin L. Hannah Jr. The CYYA Choir will sing.
In observance of Black History Month, a skit will be presented during morning worship by the Board of Christian Education.
Elder Louvenia Coleman, presiding elder of the Durham District of Carolina region will hold a business conference immediately after morning worship.
Afternoon worship will begin at 3 p.m. with the special Mass Choir celebration. The first part will consist of the Mass Choir in concert, with five selections. The second part will consist of invited guest choirs rendering two selections each.
Austin Imes of Fairfield Baptist Church in Mocksville will serve as minister of music for the Erwin Temple Mass Choir during the celebration.
Serving as president of the mass choir is Nellie P. Hargrove.
Oakdale Baptist
SPENCER ó Oakdale Baptist Church, 200 Charles St., Spencer, will show the movie “Fireproof” on Sunday night, at 6 p.m., on an 8-foot screen with theater sound.
This movie is intended to help couples build stronger marriages. It is recommended for teens who are dating or young couples engaged to be married. This is a film from the producers of “Facing the Giants.” The public is welcome to come. There will be a nursery and alternate entertainment for the younger children.

CHINA GROVE ó The True Gospel Holiness Trio from Charlotte will conduct a singing at the South China Grove Church of God Feb. 15, at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 163 Third Ave., China Grove. Visitors are welcome.

St. Paul’s Episcopal
This Sunday, the Rev. Candis Burgess will be guest celebrant for the 11 a.m. Holy Eucharist service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 930 S. Main St.
The public is welcome to worship and for a time of fellowship and refreshments in the parish hall.
The church will have a hymn sing Sunday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. in the church, followed by refreshments in the parish hall. Everyone attending is asked to bring one non-perishable food item for donation to Rowan Helping Ministries.

New Creation
STATESVILLE ó New Creation Baptist Church invites the public to celebrate with them their second pastoral anniversary for the Rev. Joseph Robinson and First Lady Mary Robinson.
It will be held at the Statesville Civic Center, 300 S. Center St., 4 p.m. Feb. 15.
The guest speaker will be Pastor Wayne B. Murdock from Assemblies of Christ in High Point. He will be accompanied by his choir and congregation.

First UMC choir
The Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church, under the direction of Matthew Brown, will travel to Washington, D.C., next weekend to sing at the National Cathedral.
The invitation was extended from Christopher Jacobson, the cathedral’s assistant organist and choirmaster, who was a colleague of Brown’s when he was studying the organ at the Eastman School of Music.
The Chancel Choir last performed at the National Cathedral (an Episcopal cathedral) in 1994 under the direction of Frank Pifferetti. Several current choir members, including Rachel Buchanan and Shully Storey, participated.
The choir leaves Friday morning and will sing a service of Choral Evensong on Friday afternoon. The music is an all-British repertoire by Harrison Oxley, Samuel Sebastian Wesley, with canticles by A. Herbert Brewer. The anthem is T. Frederick H. Candlyn’s setting of George Herbert’s poem, “King of Glory, King of Peace.”
The choir will sing a second time on Sunday afternoon, including a choral prelude to the cathedral choir’s service of Choral Evensong. Sunday’s music is mostly by American composers, including several spirituals and other works by Cary Ratcliff, Harold Friedell, and Stephen Paulus.
“The choir feels right at home singing an Anglican service as our liturgies here at the church have similar characteristics,” says Brown, who played the National Cathedral organ several years ago.
Clothing ministry
Donations of clothing are being sought for a clothing ministry sponsored by Greater Glory Triumphant Church.
Minister Willard Holdbrooks is in charge of the ministry. He is requesting donations of new or slightly used clothing for persons of all ages. Those interested in making a donation are asked to call Holdbrooks at 704-314-6408.

Second Chance
LEXINGTON ó The group Second Chance will be having a benefit concert featuring gospel and bluegrass music at Bethesda United Methodist Church 7 p.m., Feb. 28, in the church’s family life center. The concert is free.
An offering will be taken up for Randy Shumaker, a member of the group, to help with ongoing medical expenses.

New Beginning
SPENCER ó New Beginning Community Christian Church, 318 Eighth St., Spencer, will have “Feed-a-Friend Day” Feb. 25.

Men’s Day
The annual Men’s Day program will be observed at Providence AME Zion Church Sunday at 3 p.m. A service of praise and worship will be rendered by the Rev. Henry McNeill, pastor of E. First Baptist Church, Kannapolis, along with the church choir and congregation. The men of Providence will also participate in the service.
McNeill, a native of Richmond, Va., began preaching at the age of 19 and has been pastor for 30 years. He was installed as the pastor at E. First Baptist in the fall of 2008. He is married to the Rev. Y’Tusahe McNeil.
