SALISBURY — Shat-R-Shield will host a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the expansion of their manufacturing facility in Salisbury.
Rowan County is donating $25,000 of filler dirt for the project, and the city of Salisbury is paying $25,000 to help move the dirt.
Shat-R-Shield has been a leading manufacturer of safety-coated lamps and lighting products for more 40 years. The company needs to expand to accommodate business growth and new product lines, according to RowanWorks Economic Development Commission.
Shat-R-Shield plans to add 15,000 square feet to its existing 42,000-square-foot facility at 116 Ryan Patrick Drive.
“We are very fortunate that Shat-R-Shield is thriving and have an aggressive business plan to ensure that it continues to do so,” President Karen Clouse said. “A building expansion is necessary for our company to perform to its maximum potential.”
The new facility will include additional space for research and development, production, warehousing, shipping and office space. Project manager is D.R. Reynolds Co., based in Star, N.C.
The expansion is estimated to be complete by the summer.
KANNAPOLIS — Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Solutions plans to hire 80 people to work at a new service center in northeast Charlotte.
The 25,865-square-foot service center located at 10150 Mallard Creek Road, will be used primarily for customer service management, claims processing, operational reporting and technology support and is scheduled to open its doors in spring of 2014.
Known for delivering customized care to more than 1.4 million North Carolinians, Cardinal Innovations hopes the new service center will extend that same level of service to Charlotte as they begin their expansion into Mecklenburg County.
“We are happy to be expanding our services into Charlotte and Mecklenburg County,” said Steven Timmons, Cardinal Innovations’ chief administrative officer. “As a company that values our community partnerships, we look forward to adding new employees and partners through our Charlotte service center. Imperial Brown, walk-in cooler manufacturer, has named longtime employee Kristy Heatley to the newly created national position of chain account specialist.
Heatley, of Millbrook, Ala., has been serving as regional sales manager for the Central Region. She is a 14-year veteran of the company and has a variety of experience — from sales, to accounts management, to the parts department. In her new position, she will develop and maintain accounts specific to large national chain retailers.

SPENCER — Green Goat Gallery and TranqWool Knitting Provisions has new operating hours that will allow co-owner Jenni Pfaff to offer additional classes but also spend more time with her family.
Starting today, the shop at 516 S. Salisbury Ave. will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays and a split shift — 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. — on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The shop will be closed on other days.
The new hours will allow owners Jenni and Brian Pfaff to offer classes during more convenient times and accommodate a wider range of customers, they said.
TranqWool will continue to host Knit Night on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. A class schedule that coincides with the new hours will be released soon, Jenni Pfaff said, adding that she welcomes requests for classes and workshops.
The Green Goat will continue to host events and openings that will occasionally be outside of the new hours.
“Traditional retail hours may not be so convenient anymore,” Jenni Pfaff said. “I have been hearing that a good number of people can’t come to the shop because we close too early, 5:30.”
Pfaff said she suspects that she may have been missing out on a large number of customers who work or have gone back to work.

SALISBURY — Local resident Bret O’Shaughnessey has opened a yoga studio in the former Black Box Theater at 405 N. Lee St.
Ashtashakti Yoga Studio LLC is inside the Spoken Space Theatre in downtown Salisbury, formerly the Black Box and Looking Glass Artist Center.
Studio hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, with other days available by appointment. O’Shaughnessey plans to teach beginner, intermediate and advanced classes but said he is waiting for student before he creates a class schedule.
He also plans to offer meditation and breathing classes. The studio is open now and available for anyone who wants to gather to practice yoga, he said.
Classes will cost $10 for single class, $45 for five, $85 for 10 and $20 for individual sessions. A monthly pass is $75.
O’Shaughnessey said he is mostly self-taught and has been practicing yoga for five years and teaching for two years.
A pharmacy technician by trade, he plans to continue teaching yoga at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Salisbury YMCA.

Nederman’s Americas operations, based in Charlotte, has received an order from Gildan Yarns LLC to supply an air filtration and air conditioning system to a new yarn spinning facility being built in Salisbury.
Gildan Yarns is a subsidiary of Gildan Activewear Inc., a supplier of branded family apparel, including T-shirts, fleece, sport shirts, socks and underwear.
The order is worth $14.4 million.
 The Nederman system will reduce dust levels in the new production facility and supply conditioned air to the yarn processing equipment to maintain high production levels. The order includes more than 30 automatic panel filters, fine dust filters, a complete hi-vacuum waste removal, a reclaim system and 19,685 feet of ducts. It will reduce dust levels to meet OSHA regulations (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) stated by the United States Department of Labor and at the same time reduce the energy required by as much as 25 percent over conventional air conditioning supply systems.
 “This is one of our largest orders ever. It has been taken in tough competition but we believe that it is an important order in a market where the textile industry increasingly moves back production to the U.S. again,” says Sven Kristensson, Nederman’s CEO.
 The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2013 and installation is expected to start during the first half of 2014 and be finished during 2015.
