Students in Donna Rymer’s fourth- and fifth-grade AIG reading classes at Bostian Elementary collaborated with Catawba College to help bring Christmas to some children in Russia.

Catawba College student Kolya Baker delivered the donated items to children living in an orphanage in Borovichi, Russia.

AIG students donated small items such as balls, mittens, crayons and toys.

The project was to help students realize the importance helping others who have needs, especially during the giving season.

Johnson & Wales list

Five Salisbury students have been named to the fall term dean’s list at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte for earning a cumulative grade-point average of 3.4 or above.

They are Zachary Austin, David Gardner, Sluckchith Douangphachanh, Ashley Eldred and Nakeshia Killian.

Scholarship offered Area high school seniors will have another chance to offer their solutions and ideas about educating and preventing fellow teenagers from the tragic consequences of drinking and driving while earning $2,500 toward their college education thanks to the fifth annual Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship program.

The law offices of Michael A. DeMayo L.L.P. in Charlotte will be awarding $25,000 in college scholarships to 10 graduating high school seniors in counties served by the firm, which include Mecklenburg, Gaston, Catawba, Union, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Lincoln, Rowan, Caldwell, York, Stanley and Iredell.

To qualify, students must have applied for full-time enrollment at a four-year university or college and return the application packet to the law firm by March 2. Interested students can pick up an application packet at their school’s guidance counselor’s office.

Scholarships will be awarded based on the student’s response to an essay on how to prevent underage drinking and driving, as well as their application, SAT scores and transcripts. Winners will be chosen by a selection committee and announced by April 13.

The 10 winning essays will be published in a booklet and sent to community leaders and lawmakers with hope that the students’ thoughts and suggestions could help formulate public policy and increase awareness.
