Capt. Louis Edward Antosek has retired from the U.S. Navy Medical Corps after 30 years of military service.

Formerly of Salisbury, Antosek is the son of the late Louis J. and E. Eileen Antosek and a 1964 graduate of Boyden High School, Salisbury.

He received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, in 1968, and in 1972 graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa., with a doctor of osteopathy degree. After completing his internship at Memorial Osteopathic Hospital, York, Pa., he entered family practice at New Freedom Medical Center, New Freedom, Pa.

In 1976, he was directly commissioned into the U.S. Navy and entered surgical training at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in September 1976. In March 1977, he was designated a naval flight surgeon and accepted orders to Marine Aircraft Group-31 in Beaufort, S.C., as a squadron flight surgeon.

Antosek left active duty in March 1979, to pursue private practice as a family and emergency medicine physician in Clover, S.C. As a selected reservist from 1979 until 1986, he was assigned to Patton-Six Six at Naval Air Station Willow Grove, Pa. In May 1986, he returned to active duty in the Navy as an airing flight surgeon attached to Carrier Air Wing SIX aboard USS Forrestal (CV-59). Following his tour with the carrier airing, Antosek was accepted for residency training in aerospace medicine at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute. He completed a master of public health and tropical medicine at Tulane University School of Public Health in New Orleans, La., in 1989, and completed residence training in 1991.

Antosek reported to the Commanding General, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in Cherry Point, as wing surgeon from July 1991 until June 1994. In July 1994, he reported to the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) as senior medical officer. He assumed the duties as executive officer of U.S. Naval Hospital, Signorelli, in August 1996.

On Sept. 19, 1998, Antosek assumed command of U.S. Naval Research Unit No. 3 in Cairo, Egypt. He reported to Naval Hospital, Beaufort, S.C., in Oct. 2002, as director of aviation medicine. In support of Operation Iraqi Freedom-II, he was deployed from February until September 2004 to Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, as the flight surgeon attached to Marine Wing Support Squadron 273. In October 2004, he assumed command of the Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Springs, Md.
