The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $2.7 million contract to Rea Contracting LLC of Charlotte for resurfacing 26 miles of roads in Rowan County.

The work includes the milling and resurfacing of three sections of U.S. 29, two sections of N.C. 150, a section of N.C. 153 and portions of nine secondary roads.

The milling and resurfacing could begin as early as mid April and continue into September, according to the contract.

But District Engineer Chris Corriher said contractors sometimes wait until the summer, even as late as July and August, to start their work.

“There’s my disclaimer on that,” he added.

The three sections of U.S. 29 scheduled for resurfacing this year take in the highway from the Davidson County line to the Spencer city limits.

The two sections of N.C. 150 will include Mooresville Highway in Salisbury from South Main Street to Jake Alexander Boulevard and, on the far end, from the Iredell County line to Back Creek Church Road.

In Landis, N.C. 153 will be repaved from N.C. 152 to Vance Street.

Here are other Rowan County roads scheduled for resurfacing in 2007 by the state contractor:

* Old Concord Road and South Long Street in Salisbury from Jake Alexander Boulevard to East Innes Street.

* Stokes Ferry Road from St. Peter’s Church Road to St. Matthew’s Church Road.

* Ryder Avenue in Landis from Mount Moriah Church Road to U.S. 29.

* Patterson Street in China Grove from Main Street to the creek.

* All of Tuckaseegee Road from Enochville Avenue to the Cabarrus County line.

* Unity Church Road from Deal Road to the Cabarrus County line.

* Goodman Lake Road from Bringle Ferry to Long Ferry roads.

* Two sections of Long Ferry Road, including from Goodman Lake Road to the end and from Interstate 85 to McCoy Farm Road.

* Providence Church Road from Bringle Ferry Road to Goodman Lake Road.

The DOT awarded similar resurfacing contracts for 2007 in Davidson, Davie, Forsyth and Stokes counties.

In Davie County, a DOT contractor will resurface three sections of U.S. 64, a section each of U.S. 158 and N.C. 901 and portions of three secondary roads. The work covers 14 total miles.

In Davidson County, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction work will cover 20 miles and include N.C. 49 from Slate Mine Road to the Randolph County line; N.C. 150 from north of Meadow Court to Circle Drive; and seven sections of secondary roads.

In addition, a contractor will mill and resurface two other sections of secondary roads in Davidson County covering 12.6 miles.
