Eighth-grader wins Salisbury Academy spelling bee

Skip Wood, an eighth-grader, was the first-place winner of Salisbury Academy’s recent annual spelling bee.

Other winners are Brock Overcash, sixth grade, second place; Sam Washko, fifth grade, third place; and Lily Yatawara, seventh grade, fourth place.

These students will represent Salisbury Academy at the Rowan County Non-Public School Spelling Bee at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 in the gymnasium at Salisbury Academy.

Other non-public schools participating will be North Hills Christian, Sacred Heart Catholic and Salisbury Seventh-day Adventist.

Prizes will be awarded, and the first-place winner will represent Rowan County in the regional spelling bee in Winston-Salem March 25 at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The winner of the regional spelling bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., May 30 and 31.

Eight Rowan County students have been named to the fall semester chancellor’s list att Appalachian State University in Boone for earning a 3.85 or higher grade-point average.
