A flag dedication ceremony was held recently at the Abundant Living Day Care Center on Martin Luther King Boulevard last week. Salisbury Lodge 699 sponsored Eagle Scout projects for Josh and Will Mowery. Josh erected a flag pole in front of the facility, and Will constructed a new code compliant walkway in the rear of the facility. Elks Lodge 699 on South Main Street paid for the materials.
Exalted Ruler Bob Sce and Kent Roberts spoke at the dedication ceremony. Jim Carli and Harold Mowery Sr. of Salisbury were the engineering consultants.
Thirty-five veterans attended the Veterans Day dinner at the Elks Lodge. Elks Veterans Service Chairperson John Salonen was spokesperson for the event.
The 3rd Annual Don Stout Memorial Golf Tournament was held Nov. 7 at Rolling Hills Golf Club. Two $1,000 scholarships are being prepared from the proceeds of the tournament. Eighteen local sponsors contributed to the event. The Lodge has received 20 applications to be read by the scholarship committee.
Salisbury Elks placed first in the local league bowling tournament. The bowling team donated half of the prize money to Special Olympics and the other half went to the Elks National Foundation on behalf of the Lodge.
The annual memorial service for deceased members this past year is scheduled for Dec. 6. Past exalted rulers of the lodge will be officiating.
Danielle Wall, a Junior Civitan, was approved by the lodge members to receive a $100 donation, which will be given to the Citivans’ International Neurodevelopmental Disorders Foundation.
GQHS class of 1947
Granite Quarry High School Class of 1947 held its 62nd year reunion Nov.14. The group met at St. Luke’s Reformed Church, Salisbury.
Twenty five people, including 14 class members, were present. A delicious buffet lunch was served by the Brownie-Fisher Sunday School Class.
The Rev.Bill Johnson welcomed the group and gave the invocation. A candle was lit, and Johnson, assisted by Arlene Basinger Haynes, recognized the class members who had died in the past years and the two members who had died since the previous year: Ray Heath Coley and Frances Cauble Leazer.
Comments were heard from the group and information was shared about classmates who were unable to attend.
Out-of-town attendees were Jim Cooke and wife Patricia of Baltimore, Md.
Local attendees were Mary Barringer Fisher and husband, Cecil; Arlene Haynes and husband Howard; Wentworth Beck and wife Hilda; Bill Johnson and wife Madeline; Betty Lingle and husband Alan; Betty Oddie Cauble; Arnold Peeler and wife Ann; Ruby Ritchie Green; Bob Rogers and wife, Helen; LaVerne McKinney and husband PH; and Tommy Webb.
Iota Psi
The Iota Psi chapter of Beta Sigma Psi met Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rockwell Community Building for their annual Thanksgiving meal. A traditional supper was prepared with each member bringing a covered dish to be shared.
Christmas stockings were stuffed with items purchased and other items donated and collected by chapter members. Member Vicki Lippard will be returning the stuffed stockings to the Salvation Army for distribution to children during the Christmas holiday. This is a community service Iota Psi does every year.
Plans were made for the chapter’s Christmas caroling and gift bags for the residents of the Meadows Rest Home in Rockwell. Lonnie Carpenter, a good friend of the chapter, will accompany chapter members with his guitar as they walk around the rest home singing carols and distributing their gift bags. Santa Claus will be hosted with the chapter’s children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and invited guests.
Member Vicki Lippard will be opening her home for the chapter’s Christmas Party Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
Members will be attending the Singing Christmas Tree Saturday, Dec. 5.
