KANNAPOLIS Of all the shots a pet needs, the only one the state requires is rabies. Not bad, until you dont comply.
A Kannapolis woman found out firsthand what the consequences are when she was charged for failing to comply with the state rabies law.
Brandy Frazier Cain, 29, of 1112 Rosewood Ave. received notices and was also cited $100 per animal, said Rowan County Animal Control officer Luanne Sharpe.
Sharpe said the person is given a notice to vaccinate their animal and they have five days to see a veterinarian. The vet signs the notice and it is returned to animal control.
In this case, notices were sent to Cain in August, followed by multiple chances to have her two brown boxers vaccinated. Sharpe said she issued a notice in September and two in October. At that time, Cain was given a citation for $100 per dog.
She had 20 days to pay, which she did not do, Sharpe said.
Cain said she spoke to a vet who informed her that the dogs were too young to be vaccinated.
At the time of the citation, she said, the dogs were three months old.
Cain admits the reason animal control was initially called out was because she couldnt keep the dogs contained. She said she eventually had to give them to someone else to care for because they were running loose.
Cain also said she was being charged a $250 fine per animal for animal cruelty because she didnt have them vaccinated. Cain said she intends to refute the charges and fines in court.
She rescued the pups from a home where they werent being fed.
