Hooker joins center
Amanda Hooker, a 2007 graduate of Catawba College’s Environmental Science Program, has joined the Center for the Environment as project development assistant.
Her areas of responsibility include further development of the Friends of the Center and work with the center’s various educational and outreach programs.
Hooker worked with the center throughout her college years, conducting research and working with Catawba administrators on energy-saving projects through the Campus Greening Initiative.
“I have always been passionate about the environment,” she says, “but the center further cultivated that passion and gave me many opportunities as an undergraduate to work on projects that had a positive impact on the environment. It is an honor for me to give back to the institution that furthered my education and fostered my commitment to environmental stewardship.”
She lives on a farm in Yadkin County with husband Jamie and daughter Sophie, 4.
N.C. A&T dean’s list
Twelve Rowan County students have been named to the spring semester dean’s list at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro.
They are Jacqueline Barber, Mya Blackwell, Erica Brown, Verlishia Clay, Tanzanika Cowan, Demetries Gibson, Bianca Kelsey, Shawna Magbie, Evan Myers, Amiben Patel, Conchetta Sharpe and Twila Simmons.
ISSA scholarship
Travis A. Barefoot of Rockwell is a recipient of the ISSA Foundation’s 2007-08 Southeast District Award.
Barefoot, a recent honor graduate of East Rowan High School, is the son of Steve and Cheryl Barefoot-Whitley and Alan and Sharon Barefoot of Salisbury.
At East Rowan, he was a member of National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars, a Civitan Scholar, junior marshal and Scholar Athlete.
He is also a member of the East Rowan Cross Country Team, Indoor/Outdoor Track Team, Golf and Wrestling Teams and a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell.
He plans to study sports medicine and nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Travis will attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall and will study Sports Medicine and Nutrition.
This year, the ISSA Foundation awarded 59 scholarships, totaling nearly $160,000, made possible by contributions of ISSA member companies and individuals.
Koch scholarships
Three local students are among 205 from across the United States and Canada chosen to receive an academic scholarship from the Fred C. and Mary R. Koch Foundation for the 2007-08 academic year.
They are Laura Call, Erin Casner and Brynn Dailey.
Call, daughter of David and Brenda Call, plans to attend Pfeiffer University.
Casner, daughter of David Casner, plans to attend Appalachian State University in Boone.
Dailey, daughter of Reggie and Lea Dailey, plans to attend Maryville College.
Scholarships are awarded yearly to applicants demonstrating a strong academic record, extracurricular involvement, leadership and service. The recipients are all dependents of employees of Koch Industries Inc. or its wholly owned subsidiaries.
DAR good citizens
The Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution has presented the 2007-08 DAR Good Citizen awards to Morgan Wrenn Griggs, Faith Elizabeth Howell and Linley Elizabeth Evans.
All three demonstrate the qualities of a good citizen: Dependability, service, leadership and patriotism, according to the chapter.
Griggs, a rising senior at Salisbury High School, is a member of the All County Band and Chorus, National Honor Society and Future Teachers of America. She was a junior marshal and will be drum major for the band. Daughter of Rick and Monda Griggs, she serves on the Children’s Council at Calvary Baptist Church.
Howell, a rising senior at North Rowan High School, was president of her junior class and treasurer of the Spanish Club. She is a member of Future Teachers of America and the National Honor Society and vice president of the Activist Club. Daughter of Fay Elizabeth Howell, she is active in Ambassadors for Jesus Christ working with youth in her church.
Evans, a rising senior at East Rowan High School, was a Governor’s School nominee and member of the homecoming court her sophomore and junior years. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Future Homemakers of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Junior Civitan Club and a Scholar Athlete. Daughter of Kevin and Beth Evans, she is a member of Grace Bible Church and its Word of Life Teen Group.
New Catawba dean
Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, associate professor of English, director of First-Year Experience and assistant dean at Catawba College, has been promoted to dean of General Education.
In his new role, Cavalier will oversee a task force on general education assessment and review with a goal to strengthen the institution’s general education program. He will also continue to coordinate the First-Year Experience program.
He joined Catawba in 2000 after teaching for two years in the Great Books Program at Auburn University. In 2004 and 2005, he received Catawba’s Teacher of the Year Award, an award determined by a vote of the students and based on classroom support, evidence of concern for students, and intellectual stimulation.
He was awarded a Fulbright Lectureship in American literature in Kiev, Ukraine, for the 2005-06 academic year through the Fulbright Scholars Program.
He, wife Carol and their three sons lived in Kiev between September 2005 and June 2006, while he taught courses in American literature at two Kiev universities and delivered numerous guest lectures at universities throughout Ukraine and in Egypt and Estonia.
He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Swarthmore College, a master’s degree in English from Northeastern University in Boston and a Ph.D. in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
He currently serves on the Salisbury Symphony Board of Directors and has served on the vestry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the board of directors for Rowan Academy Charter School.
Gribble wins award
Anna Gribble, a recent graduate of A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, has been awarded a Cabarrus Family Medicine College Scholarship.
This is the third year the $1,000 scholarships have been given to a student at each high school in Cabarrus County. It is renewable for one year.
The scholarship is both academically and community-service based. Recipients must have a minimum 3.5 grade-point average and plan to attend a four-year school in North Carolina. Each must also demonstrate a continued involvement in community service activities.
Gribble plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Distinguished alumnus
Salisbury native Timothy L. Ludwig has been named the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus at the Carolinas College of Health Sciences in Charlotte.
Ludwig is director of all imaging services at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern, which includes responsibility for all radiology areas: CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, angiography, diagnostic radiology, cardiac catheterization, radiation oncology and a free-standing diagnostic center. Last spring he earned the AHRA Certified Radiology Administrator certification.
He graduated from CCHS in 1994 as a radiologic technologist. He also has a bachelor of science degree from Pfeiffer University and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He also teaches healthcare management classes for Mt. Olive College as an adjunct professor and recently accepted a seat on the Board of Directors of JRC/ERT, the organization which accredits imagining programs across the United States.
A 1976 graduate of East Rowan High School, he is the son of James and Nancy Ludwig of Rockwell. He lives in New Bern with his wife Barbara and their daughter Taylor.

David Michael “Dave” Beretsky is a summer cum laude graduate of Catawba College. He received a bachelor of business administration degree.
A 2002 graduate of East Rowan High School, he is the son of Mike and Kate Beretsky of Granite Quarry.
Johnson&Wales grads
Two local students are May graduates of Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte.
Jonathan Dutton of Salisbury received a bachelor of science in culinary arts.
Devin Butchart of Spencer received a bachelor of science in marketing.
Cabarrus College grad
Ashley Christine Fox received an associate degree in nursing during May graduation exercises at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences in Concord.
Fox is now employed as a registered nurse at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
She is the daughter of Jeanette Johnson of China Grove.
Auto Diesel graduate
Keith D. Redman is a July 24 graduate of Nashville Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tenn.
Redman had perfect attendance for the full 13-month program and received the Honor Seal for academic excellence.
Son of Keith and Laurie Redman of Salisbury, he is pursuing a career as a diesel mechanic.
