CONCORD ó Curtis Copenhaver has been named interim president of Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast following the resignation of Mark Nantz, announced Thursday.
Nantz and Copenhaver will work together on the transition between now and Jan. 8., according to a press release from the hospital.
Prior to this assignment, Copenhaver was president of Carolinas Rehabilitation for two years. That followed 10 years as president of CMC-Mercy. He had also served as president and CEO of Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
“We are pleased that Curtis is willing to come back from a very short period of retirement to assist us as we search for a new president of CMC-NorthEast,” the press release quoted Dennis Phillips, executive vice President, Metro Group, Carolinas HealthCare System, as saying.
“His wide range of leadership experience will serve the hospital well over the coming months until a permanent successor can be named.”
Phillips said Copenhaver will join a strong leadership team already in place at CMC-NorthEast.
A graduate of Emory University and Henry College, Copenhaver also holds a Master’s Degree in Hospital and Health Administration from Medical College of Virginia.
Nantz has accepted the job of president at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, S.C.
Hospital officials says the process for selecting a permanent replacement will begin after the holidays, with various members of the medical staff and Advisory Board participating in the selection of the ultimate successor.
Carolinas HealthCare System has a longstanding relationship with Bon Secours through its shared joint ownership agreement of the Roper St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, S.C.
“We wish Mark well in his new role at St. Francis Hospital,” Phillips said. “Mark’s leadership at CMC-NorthEast has resulted in numerous positive changes for that facility which have enhanced the quality of care the hospital delivers to its patients and the level of services the hospital provides.”
