Communities in Schools of Rowan County and Jesse Carson High School are among the recipients of state dropout prevention grants, a N.C. Department of Public Instruction press release said.
Communities in Schools will receive $175,000 ó the most any organization was awarded ó and Carson High will get $17,710, the press release said.
Kannapolis City Schools will receive a grant of $158,375 and the state awarded Communities in Schools of Cabarrus County $127,441.
The N.C. General Assembly’s Committee on Dropout Prevention awarded grants totaling $13 million to 83 organizations in 63 counties. The committee selected grant recipients through a competitive application process.
The grants were awarded to school districts, schools, nonprofit organizations and government entities. The funds are to be used to focus attention and resources on innovative programs and initiatives that promote keeping students in school, the press release said.
The General Assembly created the committee to help improve high school graduation rates in North Carolina. The Department of Public Instruction provides staff support to the committee.
