Salisbury-Rowan Utilities workers volunteered their time on Christmas Day, assisting in the cleanup of approximately 169,050 gallons of primary treated wastewater that entered and overflowed Town Creek, which is part of the Yadkin-Pee Dee river basin.
The creek flooded due to the 1.5 inches of rain falling in 5.5 hours.
“We had to wait for the rain to stop,” Jim Beamer said, utilities director for Salisbury-Rowan Utilities. “There was nowhere else for the water to go.”
Beamer commended his on-call crew and the volunteers who came into work Christmas Day to help with the cleanup.
“I’ve got to give my guys credit,” Beamer said. “We had about ten people working that day.
“We did a good job, but the creek didn’t cooperate with us.
“It’s been a really wet year,” he said.
Beamer said there was no impact to the creek.
