Catawba Singers make 2010 tour
Published 12:00 am Wednesday, December 30, 2009
The Catawba College Singers will make their 2010 Tour of the Mid-Atlantic States Jan. 7 through 14. The Singers, under the direction of Associate Professor of Music and Director of Vocal Choral and Sacred Music Studies Paul E. Oakley, plan performance stops in Frederick, Md.; Washington, D.C.; Lancaster, Pa.; Easton, Md.; and Raleigh, N.C.
Among the highlights of the tour will be a performance in Washington National Cathedral on Sunday, Jan. 10. On that date, the Catawba Singers will offer a Choral Prelude Concert there at 3:30 p.m. and will also participate in the Cathedral’s Service of Evensong at 4 p.m.
The repertoire of music to be performed on the tour includes selections by George Frideric Handel; Phil Collins; Josquin des Pres; John V. Mochnick; Ralph Vaughan Williams; Antonio Vivaldi; and several traditional spirituals. Dr. Robert Hallquist, instructor of piano and choral accompanist and Professor Christina Pier, instructor of voice and soprano soloist, will accompany the Catawba Singers on tour.
The annual tour provides an opportunity for the college to have “face to face” conversations with alumni and prospective students in various regions of the country. Additionally, it allows the institution to widen and deepen ties to the United Church of Christ denomination, with which Catawba is affiliated. In each of the cities toured, churches host the students in members’ homes and will provide performance venues.
Alumni, friends of the College, as well as prospective students and their families are invited to attend one of the tour performances in their geographic area. Most of the performances are scheduled in host churches. A schedule of tour performances is as follows:
