Area prep briefs: Parks NCPreps.com Player of the Year

West Rowan senior tailback K.P. Parks has been named NCPreps.com Football Player of the Year.
Parks and teammates Chris Smith (defensive line) and Timmy Pangburn (offensive line) made the NCPreps All-State team.
NCPreps also announces an All-State team for each classification and released its 1A squad on Thursday.
North Rowan defensive lineman Javon Hargrave made the 1A team, along with three players from state champion Albemarle (running back A.J. Little, O-lineman Eric Chester and D-lineman Justin Gramling) and South Stanly DB Detric Allen.
n Catawba men’s hoopsCatawba’s men’s basketball team plays at home Saturday at Goodman Gym at 4 p.m. against the Queens Royals of Conference Carolinas.
Catawba (6-5) edged Chowan on the road on Wednesday afternoon in its return to action following the holiday break.
Antonio Houston (15.9 ppg), Rob Fields (15.7 ppg) and Donald Rutherford (13.5 ppg) lead the Indians.
Queens (4-3) has a strong group of guards. Reggie Hopkins (15.4 ppg) is the leading scorer.
Queens has lost its last two outings, but it is is 3-0 against SAC teams. It beat Lenoir-Rhyne, Wingate and Tusculum in tight games.
n College men’s hoops
Fayetteville State’s Jamel Carpenter (West Rowan) scored 22 points on 10-for-14 shooting as the Broncos beat Queens 80-79 on Wednesday.
Carpenter hit a clutch 3-pointer with 1:46 remaining to cut a four-point FSU deficit to a single point.
n Rio Grande’s Doug Campbell (Salisbury) contributed five points in a 91-76 loss against Northwestern Ohio on Tuesday.
n Catawba women’s hoops
Catawba is 6-5 after losing to Lee 60-56 and to Clarion 79-62 at the Dayton Beach Shootout over the holidays.
Catawba returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.at Goodman Gym against University of the Cumberlands (9-3), an NAIA school located in Williamsburg, Ky.
n College women’s hoops
George Washington’s Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) had four assists as the Colonials ended an eight-game losing streak with a 45-43 win against Rutgers on Wednesday.
Shipp’s only basket was a big one. She scored off an inbounds play for a 45-40 lead with 1:12 remaining.
n South Carolina State’s Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 13 points in an 84-54 loss against North Carolina Central on Thursday.
n Prep basketball
North Davidson’s girls edged East Davidson 60-59 in the championship game of the NewBridge Classic on Thursday evening.
Haley Grimsley and Stacy Hicks scored 14 points each for the Golden Eagles (10-2).
n Kasey Haynes scored 21 points to lead Lake Norman’s girls to a 54-51 win against North Iredell in the championship game of the Statesville Record & Landmark Holiday Classic on Wednesday. Deesa Singletery scored 22 points for North Iredell.
It was the first title for Lake Norman’s second-seeded girls.
n Lake Norman’s top-seeded boys made it a sweep with an 87-46 rout of Forbush in the boys championship game. Reggie Price scored 20 points for the Wildcats.
n Racquetball tournament
The annual racquetball tournament at Salisbury Salisbury Civic Center will be held Jan. 8 (5-9 p.m.) and Jan. 9 (9-12).
Entry cost is $20 for singles, $25 for singles and doubles and $15 for doubles.

n Indoor soccer
Registration for coed indoor soccer leagues for ages 3-14 at Hurley YMCA ends Sunday.
Skill nights for ages 5-14 are held on Mondays at 6 p.m. Games are played Fridays and Saturdays. The season ends Feb. 20.
n Junior Bobcats
Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department’s Hall Gym will hold registration for the Jr. Bobcats boys, girls and coed basketball leagues through Jan. 8 or until all spaces are filled.
Registration is for boys basketball, ages 13-15, girls basketball, ages 7-15, and coed basketball for ages 5-6.
Each basketball league focuses on developing fundamental skills, building character and self esteem and teaching teamwork.
Each player will receive NBA material and a Bobcats jersey. Registration fees are $35 per player for city residents and $70 for non-residents.
Practices begin the week of Jan. 25 and will be held in the evenings at Hall Gym from 5:30-8:30 p.m., with most games on Saturdays.
