SALISBURY — Cheerwine and Krispy Kreme have teamed up again to re-release their Cheerwine Kreme Filled Doughnut in the Carolinas and to debut the doughnut in Tennessee and Roanoke, Va., just in time for the 4th of July.
Aside from the Salisbury Krispy Kreme — which gets to sell the doughnut year-round because it’s located in Cheerwine’s hometown — the one-of-a-kind sweet treat will be available at participating grocery stores and select Krispy Kreme doughnut shops only during the month of July.
“We knew the combination of these two iconic tastes of the region would appeal to fans of both Krispy Kreme and Cheerwine,” said Dwayne Chambers, chief marketing officer for Krispy Kreme, said in a press release. “We were thrilled with the response from our guests and positive feedback on our social networks, and we are truly excited to be bringing it back.”
The Cheerwine Kreme Filled Doughnut is a Krispy Kreme doughnut filled with Cheerwine-flavored creme and topped with chocolate icing and sprinkles.
Both Cheerwine and Krispy Kreme call North Carolina home: Cheerwine has been in Salisbury since 1917 and Krispy Kreme in Winston-Salem since 1937. The companies issued their first joint offering in July of last year.
“The Cheerwine Kreme Filled Doughnut is a true celebration of two Southern heritage icons doing something quite magical for loyal fans in the South. It is a perfect summer treat, and with the limited run of production and the introduction of the doughnut into Tennessee, we think excitement is going to be through the roof,” Tom Barbitta, vice president of marketing for Cheerwine, said in the press release.
“If last year is any indication, we have to tell people to make sure to get them while they can,” Barbitta said. “There’s nothing worse than watching someone else walk away with the last Cheerwine Kreme Filled Doughnut.”
This limited edition treat will be available by the half-dozen at participating Food Lion, BI-LO, Harris Teeter, Ingles Markets, Kroger, Lowes Foods, Piggly Wiggly, Publix and Walmart stores as well as participating Krispy Kreme retail shops in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee (excluding Memphis) and Roanoke, Va.
