MOCKSVILLE — The Davie boys basketball team could challenge for a state 4-A championship this season. West Rowan is in a rare recession.
That created a recipe for major mismatch last night in Mocksville, and the result was a fairly predictable 87-51 Davie cruise.
While the Falcons limped to 0-4, Davie improved to 5-0. The War Eagles are on a historic run, winning 47 of 60 games over three seasons.
“They’re really good,” West coach Mike Gurley said. “What I like is their starting five is on point. They know each other. You could tell they know how to play basketball – on top of physically being gifted. That’s a hard mountain to climb.”
 The War Eagles made it clear very early that West would have no hope. They jumped ahead 22-9 at the end of the first quarter, and the margin grew to 48-26 by halftime.
Cody Martin was on a mission after scoring just five points ­— his fewest in 25 games — in Saturday’s 54-49 win over Smith. The 6-6, 200-pound junior went off, scoring 12 of his 28 points in the first eight minutes. He wound up hitting 13 of 19 shots, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking two shots.
“We talked about it first thing Monday,” Davie coach Mike Absher said. “We felt like tonight would be a good opportunity for him to bounce back. We talked about having a double-double.”
The third quarter was more of the same as Davie outscored West 27-12. Cody went to work again in the paint, scoring 10 points on the way to his seventh 20-point game. But the 28 marked a career high.
“His relentlessness to go get the ball off the glass was impressive, and he was so patient in the post when he caught it,” Absher said. “He didn’t try to do anything too fast. He just really showed how good he is.”
Davie got 18 points and five assists from Caleb Martin, 13 points and three 3s from Peyton Sell, 12 points and four assists from Austin Hatfield and seven assists and no turnovers from Taylor Hatfield. 
“We had 20 assists again,” Absher said. “We’re moving it and sharing the ball.”
Daisean Reddick was West’s lone double-figure scorer with 19 points. Seth Martin had eight and Celexus Long seven.
The well hasn’t run dry very often in Gurley’s long career. He’s experienced just two losing seasons (1997 at Lexington and 2004 at West).
“I’ve had a few teams like that myself,” Gurley said, pointing to Davie. “They’re going to be wonderful in their conference, and they can make a serious run (in the playoffs).
“We’re kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum, having to build, figure out what we’re doing and figure out who we are. And playing against a team like that, Lake Norman and Concord, we hope it will get us better if we don’t get shellshocked from it.”
