Today is Catherine Kimball’s birthday. The Salisbury native turns 93, and to mark her birthday, her family donated to the Christmas Happiness Fund in her honor.
Kimball’s granddaughter, Michelle Powers, her husband, Jamie, their daughters, Avery, 11, Blakely, 3, and 16-month-old Catherine, donated $93 to the fund.
The fund provides Christmas presents for children who live in low-income households. The program is sponsored by the Salisbury Post, which accepts donations.
The Rowan County Department of Social Services distributes vouchers to eligible families.
Three years ago, Michelle donated $90 in honor of Kimball’s 90th birthday.
“I think it’s a great cause, and you use the money for good,” Michelle said.
Michelle said her grandmother is a great person with a great heart who is very active and resourceful.
If someone needs to know about a particular subject, Kimball has an answer.
“If I mention something to her, the next time I see her she’s found it,” Michelle said.
Kimball will pull out a dictionary or clip articles from the local paper.
“She’s always learning,” Michelle said.
Kimball taught her granddaughter about hard work, she said.
The 93-year-old worked at Duke Energy until she retired. Kimball used to hand-write customer’s bills before the system became electronic.
She and her late husband, John Thomas Kimball, would go on mystery dinner trips with a Duke Energy retiree group.
