Davie County’s boys basketball team lost 74-73 at Olympic on Saturday in a matchup of unbeaten teams.

Davie trailed 49-44 at halftime in front of a packed house. Some fans had to be turned away.

“Cody Martin got three fouls in the first quarter and sat 10 minutes, so we felt like we were in good shape to be down just five at halftime,” Davie coach Mike Absher said.

Davie (8-1) was down seven points with three minutes left but cut the deficit to one point on 3-pointers by Austin Hatfield (16 points) and Caleb Martin.

Olympic (6-0) turned the ball over with six seconds left, giving Davie a chance to set up a winning shot, but the War Eagles were unable to get a shot off.

“We had a play called, but things just didn’t work out,” Absher said. “The game ended with a scramble on the floor for a loose ball.”

Caleb Martin led the War Eagles with 23 points. Cody Martin scored 14. The Martins are junior twins committed to N.C. State.

Leading Olympic were 6-foot-5 senior Deriece Parks, who scored 23 points, and junior point guard C.J. Jackson who scored 20.

Davie plays at Lexington on Tuesday and already has locked up the No. 1 seed for the Christmas tournament.

Catawba men’s hoops
Catawba made a late run but lost 88-81 at Belmont Abbey on Saturday.

Catawba trailed by 21 late in the first half and was down 15 at halftime.

Belmont Abbey led 66-44 with 13:24 remaining, but Catawba got as close at 79-76 with 37 seconds remaining.

Freshman Elon Edwards was hot again for the Indians, scoring 25 of his 32 points in the second half. He shot 13-for-20 from the field and made six 3-pointers.

Reggie Perkins made five 3s and scored 17. Tyrece Little scored 16.

Tyshawn Good led the Crusaders (7-2) with 26 points. Terrone Sheffey had 18.

Catawba (3-5) is home against Limestone on Wednesday.

Catawba women’s hoops
Queens scored the final eight points and beat Catawba 66-58 on Saturday in Charlotte’s Grady Cole Center.

Catawba faced a 17-point halftime deficit, but had a 21-4 run in the second half.

Antoinette McPhail’s 3-pointer got Catawba even at 58-all with 1:46 remaining, but buckets by Lacey Singletary and Shonice Pettaway propelled the Royals to victory.

Shanel Sweet scored 19 for Queens (4-2).

Elizabeth Merritt and Chloe Bully scored 16 each for the Indians (4-5). Bully had six steals and five assists. McPhail had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Taylor May (South Rowan) shot 4-for-6 from the field and scored nine points.
