WINSTON-SALEM (AP) — A 23-year-old man received probation last week for fatally hitting a 15-month-old girl with his car earlier this year.
Burl Jones Jr. of Kernersville pleaded guilty to misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. He was charged in the death of Imani Scales. Authorities say her mother, Teneca Scales, was trying to push the girl across a street April 20 when Jones ran into them. Imani suffered brain injuries and died three days later.
A judge suspended Jones’ 60-day jail sentence to 18 months of supervised probation.
His attorney, Frederick Adams, says Jones had no prior criminal record, and there was no evidence of alcohol in his system. Court documents say he was driving 15 mph over the posted speed limit.
