Pastor appreciation

Celebrate Pastor Appreciation Week for the Rev. Clarence Marlin today at 5 p.m. at Fairview Heights Baptist Church with a gospel singing program featuring The Echoes for Christ and others.

On Sunday at 11 a.m. Evangelist Shelia Bush of Fairview Heights will be the speaker. On Sunday  at 3 p.m. the Rev. Nasby Mills of Outreach Progressive Ministries of Salisbury will speak.

 

ERHS Honors Chorus  at Lyerly Evangelical

Rockwell — The East Rowan High School Honors Chorus will perform at Lyerly Evangelical Church, 1320 Crescent Road, on Sunday at 5 p.m. A love offering will be received for the choral group.

The auditioned group has 46 students and is directed by Dean Orbison.  It has consistently received superior ratings at local, state and regional competitions.  Past performances have included Carnegie Hall in New York City, Lakeland Performing Arts Center in Florida, and the Greater Virginia Performing Arts Center in Virginia Beach.

Youth Missionary of Cedar Grove 

Youth Missionary of Cedar Grove AME Zion Church will observe Victory Day on Sunday during the 11 a.m. service.  Brother Terry Jackson, local preacher at Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, Landis, will be the guest speaker.

Miss Claudette Allen, Youth Missionary secretary of Cedar Grove, along with the youth will participate in the service. The  Rev. Dr. Bertha Pittman is the pastor.

 

The Cook Family at St. Matthew’s Lutheran

The Cook Family, a southern gospel group based in Denton, will perform on Sunday as a part of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church’s Second Sunday Singing at 7 p.m. in the family life center.

The group, with strong vocal combinations of  southern gospel, bluegrass and country gospel, was created more than 40 years ago by Lawrence Cook. Children and spouses jumped into the group over the years, as the family expanded and a few others joined as well.

Band members currently are James Cook on guitar; Lonnie Cook and Daniel on drums; Ronnie Cook on base and vocals; Tony Cook lead guitar; Doug Stuart on piano guitar and vocals; Otha, Gina, Tonya Cook and Stacey Stuart on vocals.

The group has performed in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Mike Havlin to speak at Northgate

Mike Havlin will be speaking at Northgate Church, 12255 West Ridge Road, on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Mike, along with his wife April, are missionaries having been in the field since 1978.

They have been involved in church planting, leadership training and outreach to street women. They have served in Jamaica, Bolivia, Peru, Chili and Hispanic outreach in the Washington, D.C. area. They have served in Managua Nicaragua for 10 years. Mike pastors a Spanish speaking church in Managua.

A team from Northgate Church just returned from a missions trip to Managua. While there, they ministered to the women at House of Hope, where Mike’s wife, April is the director.

 

Give and Take event at Mt. Zion Lutheran

Richfield — Mt. Zion Lutheran Church will hold a Give and Take event on Saturday, Jan. 17, beginning at 8 a.m. Much like a yard sale, but with NO money involved, there will be clothing, toys and household items available for free to anyone who can use them. Heirline at Gospel Lighthouse 

China Grove — The Southern gospel group Heirline will be at Gospel Lighthouse Church on Sunday at the 6 p.m. service. There will be a love offering to help with their travels. The church is located at 435 Concordia Church Road.

 

Brunswick Stew news

Statesville — Due to a fire in the fellowship hall, Elmwood United Methodist Church will not hold its annual Brunswick Stew in January. Once the renovations are completed, the Brunswick Stew will be rescheduled.
