The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will meet for its annual retreat today to refresh board members on their responsibilities as a board, legal issues and to set goals.

According to the agenda, the purpose of the retreat is to “clarify our expectations of each other,” “orient and integrate new members” and to “build team and enhance collegial relationships.”

The board will discuss the inner workings of board meetings, such as streamlining dates and times, work sessions and business meetings, digital device use, closed session and open session rules and media relations.

Board members will also talk about the role of a board member and the role of Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody, how they differ and how they can work together.

They will talk about goals, including budgeting, Knox Middle and the consolidated elementary school in the western part of the county, updating policies and a maintenance and capital plan.

The board will also discuss long term property planning, existing properties, safety, roofs and new buildings, as well as how the board works, how members should interact with public bodies and who speaks for the board.

The board will meet today from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Center for the Environment at Catawba College in room 312.
