MOUNT ULLA — It was a game the West Rowan girls were expected to win, and they did in impressive fashion. The Falcons piled up 32 points in the opening quarter and never looked back in a 72-21 South Piedmont Conference victory over winless Northwest Cabarrus.
West Rowan (7-9, 5-4 SPC) used its pressure defense to produce eight steals in the opening quarter en route to a 32-9 lead. The Falcons then racked up 21 consecutive points in the second quarter to make the halftime margin 43-11 and set the stage for a running clock in the second half.
“It can be hard to play a game like that,” West Rowan coach AshleyPoole said. “We focused on playing our style of basketball, keeping the intensity up and not slacking off on defense.”
Junior Khaila Hall led the way for West Rowan with 18 points, 15 in the decisive first half. Shanice Miller added 10 with strong inside play and guard Taylor Martin had nine. In all, 12 Falcons played and 11 of them scored. Northwest Cabarrus (0-14, 0-9 SPC) was topped by freshman guard Tricia Robinson with seven.
West Rowan returns home Friday to face South Rowan in a key SPC battle.
