SALISBURY — Salisbury and North Rowan won a lot of the battles, but South Rowan won the war once again in both the girls and boys divisions of the annual Rowan County Championship swim meet Thursday at the Hurley YMCA pool.

The Raider boys (144) easily outdistanced Salisbury (98) and North Rowan (94) to claim their 11th straight county championship crown dating back to 2003. South Rowan’s Reagan May led the team with three victories including the 50-yard freestyle and as part of the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

On the girls side, Salisbury and South Rowan each won five of the 11 events, but the Raiders used superior depth to claim their second straight county title with 157 points. Salisbury finished second with 135. Raiders Taylor Kluttz  and Leslie Frank, each with three event wins led the South triumph. Kluttz won the 100 and 200 freestyles while Franks claimed the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. They were both part of the teams’s 200 freestyle relay victory.

“I think both our sides swam great today,” South Rowan coach Eric Anderson said of his two championship teams. “They have not been rested at all. I have been beating them up pretty good the last couple of weeks.”

Anderson started as the Raiders’ head coach just two months ago after a long career at AL Brown HIgh. But he was well aware of the legacy and winning tradition for the South Rowan swimmers in the past decade.

Despite their runner-up finish, the Salisbury girls produced the top individual performance of the meet as Kathryn Morrison won four events on the day. Morrison claimed both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke individually and was part of the Hornets’ winning 200 yard medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

“Kathryn did really well and won all four of her events,” Salisbury coach Ryan Starrett said. “We did awesome as a team and had some excellent swims on both sides.”

The only event winner not from South Rowan or Salisbury was Carson’s Shea Hardman, who easily won the grueling 500 freestyle race.

On the boys side, South Rowan, Salisbury and North Rowan each had three event wins, but again the Raiders quality depth produced the championship. East Rowan won the the two events, both by Jason Troutman in the 100 yards butterfly and backstroke events. Cody Dollarhide of North Rowan won two individual events for the Cavaliers as he claimed the 200 freestyle early then rallied past Salisbury’s Matt Wooly on the final length to win the 100 yard breaststroke.

Reagan May of South Rowan and Ethan Knorr of Salisbury turned in the top overall performances with wins in three events each, May sprinted to the 50 yard freestyle title then was part of the winning 200 medley relay team and the 200 free relay squad. Knorr won the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle for the Hornets and was part of their winning 400 yard freestyle relay team.
