The woman in charge of a Salisbury city division where money was found to be missing has resigned, according to officials.

Jamie Lester was the Customer Service Manager for the city. She resigned Friday, according to Interim City Manager John Sofley.

Sofley said Lester did not give a reason for her resignation.

Earlier this month, the city terminated a customer service clerk, Joe Elliott, saying he had misappropriated funds.

“At the present time we account for $1,500 of missing funds,” a termination letter said.

The letter was signed by Lester.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the missing money, and Sofley said to his knowledge there is currently no evidence showing Lester did anything wrong.

Mark Drye, a finance management analyst for the city, is filling Lester’s role until a replacement is found.

The SBI’s investigation is ongoing, and Sofley said he does not know when it will be finished.

Asked if more money is known to be missing, Sofley said he could not give any more information because the investigation is not completed.

The city has not pressed charges against Elliot over the missing money. If the investigation finds evidence to prove that Elliott took money, the city will press charges, Sofley said.

Elliott’s termination letter, dated Jan. 9, said if he doesn’t make arrangements to reimburse the city for the $1,500 by Feb. 9, the city will proceed with legal action.

Mayor Paul Woodson said he did not know until Monday about Lester’s resignation. He said he does not know why she left, but that she is a “pretty good lady.”
