N.C. still has lowest rate of union workers
North Carolina had the lowest rate of union membership in the country in 2014, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It had the lowest rate in 2013, too.
Only 1.9 percent of employed workers in the state were union members last year, down from 3 percent in 2013. The national rate was 11.1 percent. Across the country, 14.6 million workers belonged to a union last year. The figure for North Carolina was 76,000.
South Carolina had a slightly higher rate, 2.2 percent, than North Carolina. But the state’s total number of union workers, 41,000, is less than North Carolina.
Virginia had a rate of 4.9 percent — 179,000 workers.
New York has the nation’s highest rate of union membership, at 24.6 percent.
