Salisbury will host a public information session Feb. 5 on its program to identify and reclaim land designated as brownfields.

The city received an Environmental Protection Agency Brownfield Grant in October to identify brownfield properties throughout Salisbury. Brownfields are defined by the EPA as abandoned or underutilized properties where redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination.

Though brownfields typically are eyesores for communities, these properties if cleaned up and returned back to productive use, could create jobs and promote economic development, a city news release said.

Salisbury’s program aims to “remove environmental barriers to development, to benefit public health and the local economy,” the news release said. The city has partnered with Cardno Environmental Services, which is assisting with management of the brownfields program.

City officials and a Cardno representative will be available at the information session to planned project activities and seek input about additional brownfield properties within the city.

The public information session will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
