Chestnut Hill Neighboring Congregations Plan Joint Lenten Bible Study Series

Three congregations in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, Coburn Methodist Church, Haven Lutheran Church, and St. Paul Episcopal Church, will come together during Lent for Wednesday night Bible Study at 7 p.m. A meal will be served at 6 p.m., prior to the Bible studies. Local pastors will lead the Lenten study on “The Last Seven Words of Christ.”

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, the Rev. John Tucker will lead the study on “Today you will be with me.” On March 4, the Rev. Sean Barrett will cover the topic, “Woman, Behold your son.” “My God, my God” will be the focus for the Rev. Phil Hagen on March 11. The Rev. Susan Bame will lead the discussion on March 18, entitled “I am thirsty.” On March 25, the Rev. Don McCain will reflect on, “Father into your hands.”

All the Bible studies and meals will take place in the Haven Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 207 W. Harrison St. The meal and Bible study are open to the public.

 

St. Paul’s Episcopal

On Sunday Feb. 22 St. Paul’s Episcopal welcomes the Rt. Rev. Anne Hodges-Copple, Bishop Suffragan, and the Rev. Jane Holmes, South Regional Deacon.

The Bishop will hold an Adult Form at 9:15 a.m. Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by the Bishop. Following the service, a reception will be held in the parish hall. Afterwards, the Bishop will meet with the vestry in the Joslin House at 1:15 p.m.

First Presbyterian

First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury celebrates the first Sunday in Lent with Holy Communion at all three worship services. Dr. William Carl III, professor of Homiletics at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, will speak in the morning services as well as the 6 p.m. service in Lewis Hall.

 

First UCC

First United Church of Christ, 207 W. Horah St., begins the season of Lent at the 11 a.m. service on Feb. 22. when resident pastor Carol Hallman begins a sermon series called “Come to the Feast.” This week’s focus is on “Life food” as Jesus is driven into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit, and what we need to do in order to survive in the wilderness .

Sunday evening begins our Lenten Sunday suppers, served at 5:30 p.m., with the program beginning around 6 p.m. The evening series theme for 2015 is “Wilderness Wanderings” with Pastor Anthony Smith speaking on Moses and the burning bush on Feb. 22. RSVP at 704-633-2723.

Word of Life Family Worship Center, 726 E. Liberty St., will host its 22nd annual Black history program on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. on the theme of “Lift Every Voice – Let’s Make History.”

This annual program has always commemorated and recognized African American achievers who have assisted in making this country great. This year special emphasis will be placed on “originality,” African Americans making a difference now. There will be original poems, songs, dances, and skits and members of the congregation will be recognized for their achievements in the community. Proceeds from the service will benefit the Word of Life Scholarship Program.

St. Luke Baptist Church on Hawkinstown Road will be celebrating Black history on Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. in a program featuring the youth department led by Mrs. V. Heggins and the Rev. Dr. Beverly Rose of Mt. Zion CME Church in Salisbury, who will speak on “How and why did I arrive here?” Rev Arthur Heggins is host pastor.

Southern City Church

EAST SPENCER — The men of Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, at 904 S Long St., will observe Men’s Day on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. The Rev. Tim Bates, pastor of both Calvary Presbyterian Church and Cameron Presbyterian Church in Statesville, will be the speaker.

Rev. Bates is a 1987 graduate of Catawba College and a 2006 graduate of Hood Seminary. He is a board member for the Robertson Foundation, the United Way and Smart Start. He is a member of the NAACP and a volunteer for Communities in School. He is the founder of the Night Crawlers, a group that prays for the neighborhoods in the county, as well as an assistant basketball coach for the North Rowan High School boys’ team.

Bishop George Morgan at Love Christian Center

EAST SPENCER — Bishop George Morgan will be ministering at Love Christian Center, 102 N. Stewardess Board #2 Annual Program

LANDIS — The Stewardess Board number 2 at Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, will hold its annual program on Sunday, Feb. 22, beginning at 4 p.m. It will present The Norris A. Reid Men’s Choir of the church in concert. Under the direction of C. Eugene Caldwell, the Men’s Choir has been providing music ministry at the church since the early 1960s. The choir was organized under the leadership of the late John F. Caldwell.

Stewardess Board number 2 is currently under the leadership of Rosella Caldwell, who followed her mother, the late Cardella Caldwell as its president. Mary H. Knox is chairwoman of the program committee, and Rev. Clarence J. Shuford Jr. is pastor.

KANNAPOLIS — Crossover Kannapolis Revival Services will be held Feb. 22-25. This is a unique, interdenominational revival experience shared by four different churches: Centerview Baptist, Marable Memorial AME Zion, Kannapolis Church of God and Sandy Ridge AME Zion.

Teresa Moore-Mitchell in concert

Soprano Teresa Moore-Mitchell will be in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in the sanctuary of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St.

Moore-Mitchell, an opera singer who has performed across the country and beyond, will be joined by students at Livingstone and Catawba colleges. Dr. Phillip Burgess, organist/choirmaster at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and Catawba’s director of choral activities, will serve as accompanist.

This event is free and the public is invited. The Rev. Rhodes Woolly is senior pastor of St. John’s.

 

Ain’t That a Witness! A Concert for Black History Month

KANNAPOLIS — In celebration of Black History Month, “Ain’t That a Witness! A Concert of African-American Art Songs and Spirituals” will be performed Sunday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Vance St. The concert will feature Kannapolis native David Hamilton, tenor; LeSondra Brown, soprano; Jason McKinney, baritone and Carol Soles, piano. There is no cost for the concert. A freewill offering will be accepted.

Originally from Milwaukee, McKinney graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he studied voice with soprano Marilyn Taylor and tenor Glenn Siebert. Jason also studied conducting with Maestro James Allbritten. While in school, Mr. McKinney was the recipient of the Helen Odom scholarship, the Music Dean’s Talent scholarship, and the Chancellor’s Grant for Excellence. Jason was the winner of the 2001 and 2002 Civic Music Association of Milwaukee’s Harold Levin Scholarship Competition and was awarded the Judge’s Choice Award at the 2001 Metropolitan Opera’s District competition. In 2004 Jason won that competition in the South Carolina District and continued on to place second in the Southeastern Regional Finals. Jason has performed at many prestigious venues, both in the US and abroad, including The Kennedy Center and The White House. He has also toured extensively in Europe in productions of Porgy and Bess.

Carol Link Soles earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and graduated cum laude from Salem College and received a Master of Music degree in accompanying from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She did post graduate work at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and served as Instructor/Staff Accompanist at Elon College. Carol received a Juris Doctor degree in law from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has served as organist/accompanist for many churches and vocal groups in the Kannapolis/Concord area. Carol resides in Kannapolis with her husband, Tim and daughter, Hannah.

David Hamilton holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from The Boston Conservatory and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is also a member of Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society. David has studied voice under Mark Oswald of the Met and other well known operatic instructors. He is the recipient of the Ron and Charlotte Payne award at The Metropolitan Opera Auditions in Charlotte and won first place in the Music Teachers National Assocation Award in Greensboro in 2003. He also placed first in the NATS competition in New York in 2007.A professional tenor for 14 year, David has captivated audiences from Indonesia to Israel to Mississippi. He was most recently seen in the demanding role of The Male Chorus in “The Rape of Lucretia” with the Boston Conservatory Opera. David has had lead roles in various operas all around the US. Art songs and lieder are among his musical passions. An avid recitalist, he is equally at home in symphonic and concert repertoire, and has performed leading solos in numerous masterworks.After years of study, professional performance and travel, David resides in the Kannapolis area with his wife Amy and their four children. He currently serves as Minister of Music at First Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis, Choral Director at AL Brown High School, and is a voice teacher and vocal coach.

Attention Bluegrass Lovers!

Bluegrass lovers are invited to enjoy a good local music in a family environment at “Picking for the Master,” hosted by Trading Ford Baptist Church at 7 p.m. on Friday Feb. 27.

The Yadkin Valley String Band will play the opening set. The band is made up of members from the Davie, Rowan and Davidson counties. All pickers are invited to then join in for a jam session that will conclude the evening (acoustic instruments only).

Concessions will be available and doors will open at 6 p.m. There is no admission charge, but the hat will be passed to help bring in more talent from the surrounding area in future months. “Picking for the Master ” is the last Friday night of each month and is a ministry of Trading Ford Baptist Church. Over the years, Carolyn Isenhour and Teresa Gray have shared God’s love on Sunday morning and for special worship services. Now they will be together at the piano, sharing some favorite solo pieces, as well as playing together, four hands at one piano. HICKORY — The Lenoir-Rhyne University A Cappella Choir, directed by Paul D. Weber, will present two local winter concerts next weekend.
