7:30 a.m.: Precipitation will spread into the mountains first, then gradually come our way this afternoon. At first, we can expect snow and sleet, but quickly warming temperatures aloft will change the snow to freezing rain from southwest to northeast into the evening. It will taper off late tonight.

We could have snow of 2 to 4 inches, and at least a quarter inch to three to four tenths of an inch of ice. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s.

The conditions will cause serious traffic problems, especially along 1-40 tonight. Trees and power lines may snap due to the weight of the snow and ice. Power outages are possible.

We have a 20 percent chance of snow showers after noon on Wednesday with a high of only 22 degrees. The wind from the west northwest will pick up to 11-16 mph, with gusts as high as 26, possibly causing further damage to weakened limbs.

And by Wednesday night the low will be in the single digits — 6 degrees. Special precautions must be taken in such cold. There will be a high demand for electricity at the time, so consider turning your heat down slightly. Frozen pipes are a strong possibility. Check the air pressure in your tires. Make sure you have sufficient antifreeze. Keep emergency supplies close by, such as extra blankets, bottles of water, flashlights, medication. Pets, senior citizens and people with inadequate methods of heat should be brought to shelter. Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold as frostbite is likely. Dress in layers to provide insulation.

Thursday’s high will be 22, and the low even colder — 5 degrees. Other forecasts put the low at 1 degree.

Friday will be mostly sunny, but only 28 degrees, and Friday night’s low will be 16.
