CHINA GROVE — The China Grove town board will have a special-called meeting Monday as a planning session for future projects in south Rowan.

The China Grove Town Board meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. is scheduled to include discussion on a potential extension of sidewalks, a park or recreation center off of Patterson Street, resurfacing of streets and extension of water and sewer lines.

The meeting will be similar to retreats held by many elected officials, including discussion on short and longer term needs.

“It’s basically just going to be a planning session to sit down and talk about one year, ten year and five year goals, said Town Manager Ken Deal. “It’s just a time to sit down and come up with a vision and a plan for the future.”

Two of the items on the agenda could relate to the Carolina Thread Trail, Deal said. The thread trail is a series of interconnected greenways, trails and blueways through 15 counties in both North Carolina and South Carolina. The thread trail doesn’t currently extend into Rowan County and hasn’t yet been passed by the Rowan County Board of Commissioners.

If passed, Deal said the trail would pass through or nearby a tract of land where Patterson Street passes over Grants Creek.

It’s pretty sufficient in size, but not substantial enough for development,” Deal said. “It’s not really good for much except possibly a park.”

Deal also mentioned extending sidewalks down Patterson Street to South Rowan High School as another possibility, as the town council will discuss sidewalks extension during the meeting.
