Basketball: No playoff games Wednesday

The 2015 basketball postseason took another postponement on Wednesday.

With the area expecting snow to start in the early evening Wednesday, all after-school activities for Rowan-Salisbury Schools scheduled for that night were postponed. That included Wednesday night’s games in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association state basketball playoffs.

The state association issued an advisory to its member schools Wednesday morning saying any playoff game that cannot be played Wednesday must be rescheduled for Thursday.  The organization will keep tabs on the weather and, if necessary, give any additional information mid-morning Thursday.

Games are not supposed to start before 4 p.m. Thursday. The association must approve any requests to start a game before that time.

“We’re supposed to play as soon as we can,” South Rowan athletic director Angie Chrismon said. “…We have officials on stand-by and everybody on call. So as soon as we can play, we’ll play.”

That could be a while. In anticipation of the winter weather, Rowan-Salisbury Schools announced Wednesday night schools and offices will be closed Thursday.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm advisory for Rowan County and the surrounding counties that is set to expire at 7 a.m. Thursday. The NWS said Winter Storm Remus is expected to dump 5-8 inches of snow in the area, although areas east of Interstate 77 could see upwards of 10-12 inches.

It’s scheduled to start after 8 p.m. and lighten up around 3 a.m.

East Rowan athletic director Chad Mitchell said he feels Saturday is the earliest teams could get on the court.

The association said it is “exploring a variety of alternatives if postponements continue.”

Rick Struck, associated commissioner for communication, stated in an email it is too early to detail the NCHSAA’s options for the tournament schedule or what could happen with next week’s regional tournament.

“We may have a better idea after this next storm,” he said.

He said the association has “contractual agreements with the locations for the regions [tournaments] so it is not so easy to reschedule regionals with other events they have. Trimming the tournament field at this point is not on the table and there have been a handful of first round games, some played and some going on (Wednesday) afternoon.”
